Welcome to the Joe Maneri Website! Here you will find a comprehensive resource of information about Joseph Gabriel Esther Maneri, legendary improvisor, composer, theorist, and educator. 7-15-04 In 1970, Joe and Sonja Maneri, having recently moved from Brooklyn, performed a concert featuring music from 15 countries at the library of their new home town of Malboro, Massachusetts. We are proud to offer a sample of this remarkable concert, which was a smashing success. This clip offers a rare chance to hear Joe play clarinet in a traditional Greek style, which he had mastered through years of Greek weddings. 6-26-04 Twenty-Four of Joe Maneri's poems, written in his own language, are featured in Asemia (Anabasis. Xtant, 2003). From the publisher: "asemia collects work by tim gaze, louise tournay, joe maneri, abdourahamane diarra and jim leftwich. copies are 96 pages and $12 per issue and can be had from jim leftwich at Anabasis. Xtant, 1512 mountainside court, charlottesville, va 22903." 5-15-04 ECM records has set June 15, 2004 as the release date for Joe Maneri's latest record, Angles of Repose. From the ECM website: ECM brought together microtonal improvisers Joe and Mat Maneri with veteran bass giant Barre Phillips for the production project “Tales of Rohnlief” in 1998, and the three musicians found such immediate rapport that they’ve been working together at every opportunity since then. “Angles of Repose”, the new disc, was recorded in the chapel of Ste. Philomene next door to Phillips’s home in the south of France, and the warmly resonant sound of the chapel becomes part of the music’s personality, as Mat (on viola) and Barre continue to find new ways to frame or challenge the uniquely vocal sound of Joe’s saxes and clarinet. No other “free music” group sounds like this. 12-09-03 On Sunday, November 2nd, Joe Maneri recieved the ICAP (International Committee of Artists for Peace) Humanity in the Arts Peace Award. The award was presented at a concert given by ICAP musicians Buster Williams, Larry Coryell, Jun Saito and Ben Schwendener. This concert was put together in celebration of the SGI (Soka Gakkai International) sponsored exhibit "Creating a Culture of Peace for Children of the World" at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education's Gutman Library. Joe was awarded this honor for his beautiful spirit of uniting people through innovative, heartfelt music coupled with his warm, embracing humanity, which he has put forth for so many years as an educator. Past recipients of this award include Nelson Mandela, Zubin Mehta, Dr. Lawrence Carter and Betty Williams. Congratulations Joe! 10-17-03 Harvey Pekar has written a new article about Joe Maneri for the White Plains based "The Journal News". The article, titled "The avant-garde and Joe Maneri", can be found here. 8-30-03 The new movie American Splendor (Fine Line Features), documenting the life of writer Harvey Pekar, opens with Paniot's Nine from Joe's album of that name. The soundtrack featuring Paniot's Nine is available from New Line Records. NPR has an excerpt from a comic strip about Joe by Harvey Pekar. Pekar, one of Joe's strongest supporters, agreed to let the filmmakers make the movie on the condition that Joe's music be used in the soundtrack. 8-21-03 Check out the added sound samples on the List of Works page. Here for the first time are excerpts from Joe's 10 Fugues for Piano and his Theme and Variations, performed by pianist John McDonald. 4-30-03 Check out the new Students page. If you would like to be listed, email the webmaster. We also have more pictures. We're planning a master class by Joe in NY this summer. The class will be held by the Boston Microtonal Society as part of Judith Berkson's microtonal ear-training and performance class. Check back here for more info or email the webmaster. |
